| God's
Commandments | The Law |
The following is a concise summary of the
Law - the Commandments of God. They are to be understood as part of God's plan to live a
life of freedom, not restriction. The first four Commandments represent how we are to
respect, honor and love God. The last six Commandments represent how we are to respect,
honor and love our neighbor.
The Meaning of the Commandments
For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
Apostle John
1 John 5:3
New King James Version
Which is the greatest commandment...?
"'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'
Our Lord Jesus
Matthew 22:37-39
New King James Version
"On these two commandments hang the Law (Ten Commandments) and the Prophets"
Our Lord Jesus
Matthew 22:40
New King James Version
What about the Old Testament commandments...?
"If you love Me, keep My commandments.
Our Lord Jesus
John 14:15
New King James Version
For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome
Apostle John
1 John 5:3
New King James Version
Again, the first four Commandments represent how we are to respect, honor and love God. The last six Commandments represent how we are to respect, honor and love our
neighbor.
The Law of God on Earth: The Ten
Commandments of Exodus 20
And God spoke all these words, saying:
"I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
1. "You shall have no other gods before Me.
2. "You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
3. "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
4. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maid servant, not your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
5. "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
6. "You shall not murder.
7. "You shall not commit adultery.
8. "You shall not steal.
9. "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10. "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's."
The Lord our God
Exodus 20:1-17
New King James Version
Has the Law ever changed...?
"The law and the prophets were until John (John the Baptist). Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached (by Jesus Christ son of God), and everyone is pressing into it. "And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one tittle of the law to fail.
Our Lord Jesus
Luke 16:16-17
New King James Version
The Law - the Ten Commandments - establishes our judgement criteria for each and every person on Earth.
...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Apostle Paul
Romans 3:23
New King James Version
Sin is a separation from God. The Commandments are a standard against sin. So, we then need a plan - a way to be re-united with the living and loving God. Be clear, God never left us. We left God. By our sin and by our choices each day, we separated from His tender presence.
